It was the students at Southeast of Saline (SES) school district who envisioned and promoted high performance upgrades in their district to initiate a $1.4 million infrastructure improvement effort that is projected to cut energy consumption by at least 21 percent, saving about $83,000 per year in energy and operating costs. Just as importantly, the project has improved the learning and teaching environment and has served to build student interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

Optimizing the Learning Environment… Students perform best in high performance schools where the physical learning environment is comfortable, quiet, well-ventilated and well-lit. Children demonstrate this fact in classrooms every day. Teachers confirm it. And it is proven by research time and time again.
Effective learning environments are, in part, the result of high performance school design followed by proper maintenance and regular upgrades throughout the life of the building. Best practices in school design and maintenance can produce higher test scores, increased average daily attendance, lower operational costs, and improved teacher satisfaction and retention.
Trane has provided solutions for high performance classrooms and sustainable schools that are fiscally and environmentally responsible, and significantly improve the quality and cost-effective delivery of education.
The BTU Crew is a Trane Energy Efficiency program designed to give Middle School students a hands-on understanding of high-performance buildings. At the same time, students are introduced to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that are fun and can make a positive contribution to the environment. Over the course of six classes, students conduct hands-on experiments, perform a preliminary energy audit on their school using Trane Energy Analyzer Software, and participate in a “career day” to learn more about Green Careers. School Districts across Kansas and Missouri have participated in The BTU Crew program. Click on the District links below to learn more:
Trane is a National sponsor of The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) is a leading non-profit organization focused on making schools better places to learn by facilitating the design, construction and operation of high performance schools through key programs. CHPS has published the first and only Operations Report card for the total learning environment, and has put together State-specific criteria for new construction and major renovations. “After our first summer with the new (Trane) equipment, we compared electricity bills to previous years and saw a substantial savings. Communication and customer service were excellent, and satisfying our desires was a top priority for Trane.”
